The Global Innovation Award aims to recognise the most innovative start-ups outside the EU that bring new technologies, products or services to market. ESASTAP Plus is sponsor of this award, which will granted at the 2014 Science|Business Summit. The event will bring together leaders from research, industry and policy to debate how to best unleash Europe's technological potential. The Summit will also recognise excellence in innovation by celebrating the achievements of visionary entrepreneurs, top universities, and corporate champions featured in the 6th Academic Enterprise Awards (ACES).

Success story

EU project hunts for natural substitutes to synthetics

The EU-funded AGROCOS project is foraging through the plant world for natural substitutes to synthetic ingredients currently used in cosmetics, and in agrochemical products such as insecticides, herbicides and fungicides.

The project ends in September 2014 and the researchers have so far identified 30 promising molecules. These are being tested by the consortium's commercial partners – Korres, a Greek natural cosmetics company, and Germany's BASF, one of the world's largest chemical manufacturers.

The AGROCOS project, supported with €2.9 million in EU funding, brings together companies Korres, BASF and BRUKER Biospin with six research centres and universities from France, Greece, Panama, Switzerland and South Africa. Read on

The European Commission and the European Investment Bank Group (EIB) launched a new generation of EU financial instruments and advisory services to help innovative firms access finance more easily. Read on

EDCTP2 approved with €683 million for clinical trials in Sub-Saharan Africa

The European Council has approved a €683 million (US$930 million) budget for the second phase of the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) for medical research in Sub-Saharan Africa. This sum will be matched by participating European and African states. Currently, 13 European countries and 9 African countries (e.g. South Africa) have already joined the Association in order to participate in EDCTP2. The official launch of EDCTP2 will take place in Cape Town on 2 December 2014. Read on

Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) open funding opportunities | Deadline 30 September 2014

Under Horizon 2020, FET Open will continue its mission to support early-stage joint science and technology research around new ideas for radically new future technologies.

Call for Expressions of Interest - 'Business Cooperation Centres' in third countries for the Enterprise Europe Network (2015 - 2020) | Deadline 31 October 2014

This call for expressions of interest addresses leading business and innovation support organisations located in third countries other than those participating in the Programme for the Competitiveness of Enterprises and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (COSME). The objective is to establish 'Business Cooperation Centres' for the Enterprise Europe Network in international markets in order to form a unique international network of excellence facilitating business cooperation, technology transfer and research collaboration. FET proactive funding opportunities: Towards exascale high-performance computing | Deadline 25 November 2014

In the Work Programme 2014-2015, FET Proactive called for three initiatives under the "Emerging themes and communities" call (the deadline was 1 April 2014), and is calling for a fourth one, under the dedicated "Towards exascale high-performance computing" call, implementing part of the High Performance Computing strategy elaborated in the context of the HPC Public-Private Partnership by ETP4HPC. Winners of ESASTAP Plus activities for strategic, long-term partnerships

The response to the ESASTAP Plus call for twining activities was high. The call intends to further intensify scientific and technological collaboration by deepening cooperation in marine sciences and raw materials.

Grants were awarded to 12 research institutes across Europe and South Africa and will enable reciprocal scientific visits of 36 researchers (including early career scientists) between these two parts of the world prior to 31 May 2015. Read on

South Africa and Italy to step up cooperation in science, technology and innovation

South Africa and Italy have signed a new programme of cooperation for the next three years, committing to intensive collaboration in science, technology and innovation (STI).

The cooperation will see the science communities of the two countries collaborating in biotechnology, medicine and health, nanotechnology, new advanced materials, ICT, the environmental sciences, and radio astronomy. Read on
